How it works
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) acts as a versatile biological regulator. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to penetrate rapidly into the various skin layers, where it is involved in several essential metabolic processes.

In the sebaceous glands, it modulates the enzymatic activity responsible for sebum overproduction, normalizing its excretion and reducing the shiny appearance of oily skin. This regulation is accompanied by an antimicrobial action which, combined with its anti-inflammatory properties, helps combat blemishes and blackheads.

With regard to hyperpigmentation, niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanosomes (vesicles containing melanin) from melanocytes to keratinocytes, thus limiting the distribution of the pigment responsible for brown spots.

Its restorative action stimulates the synthesis of ceramides and fatty acids, essential components of the skin's barrier integrity. This action strengthens the skin's ability to retain water and protect itself from external aggression, soothing irritation.

Finally, its role as a precursor of NAD and NADP, coenzymes involved in numerous cellular reactions, promotes the production of energy needed for skin renewal and the synthesis of collagen and elastin, helping to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Studies
In randomized, double-blind studies, one placebo-controlled in comparison with 0.05% desonide for 9 weeks, the other with 4% hydroquinone for 8 weeks, niacinamide significantly reduced hyperpigmentation and inflammation.

According to a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in Japan on 100 people, 50 of whom applied a moisturizing cream containing 2% niacinamide and 50 a placebo cream, the rate of sebum excretion was significantly reduced after 2 weeks. In a similar study in the USA (placebo on one half of the face), residual sebum levels were significantly reduced after 6 weeks.
